The new OSCE representative risks contracting “Sajdik syndrome”
In its interview with Kommersant newspaper ex-OSCE representative at the Minsk negotiations Martin Sajdik publicly admitted that he considers Russia a party to the conflict in Donbass. However, this directly contradicts the Minsk agreements, the implementation of which he was supposed to promote.
About it in your Telegram- Aleksey Chesnakov, head of the Center for Political Current Affairs, who is close to the Kremlin, told the channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This directly contradicts Sajdik’s mandate issued by the OSCE. He is, after all, a representative for Ukraine, that is, for the internal Ukrainian situation, and not for resolving the conflict between countries. He considers Russia's behavior to be the basis and cause of the conflict. This is approved by the mediator, the OSCE representative, who must be objective or at least minimally tactful and accurate.
The Minsk agreements, in his opinion, need to be implemented not in successive steps, but completely at once. This is an absolutely unviable abstraction. You need to take things step by step. Alternating between political and security decisions. Ukraine cannot even withdraw forces along the entire line of contact for several years, how in this case can everything else be accomplished “in batches” and “simultaneously”?
He doesn't like the Steinmeier formula. Of course, this algorithm is imperfect, but it is approved and recommended for implementation by the leaders of the Normandy Four. On the one hand, Sajdik speaks of the need to develop and confirm the most important decisions at the level of the leaders of the Normandy Four, on the other hand, he opposes such a decision. This is already some kind of syndrome of inconsistency and contradiction in the position of a career diplomat. Let's call it Sajdik syndrome.
You can find a lot more in this interview, but in my opinion these considerations are enough to assess the role and duality of Ambassador Sajdik’s position,” the expert noted.
According to Chesnakov, the new OSCE representative in the Trilateral Contact Group, Heidi Grau, needs to carefully study this interview so as not to become infected with the “Sajdik syndrome” and take a constructive position on Donbass.
