The new Prime Minister of Moldova demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria
Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Chicu, who took office last week, spoke in favor of the “withdrawal of foreign troops.”
Point reports this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports. It is obvious that Kiku meant the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Transnistria.
“Of course, I support the withdrawal of foreign troops from the territory of Moldova. Moreover, we are aware of Russia’s initiative to begin disposing of ammunition depots in Kolbasna. During our visit to Moscow, we will discuss this initiative in detail in order to consider technical aspects and begin negotiations with other partners of Moldova to establish a mechanism for the rapid and safe removal of ammunition from our territory,” Chicu said.
Today he will meet with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. Chicu was appointed to the post after parliament expressed no confidence in pro-European Prime Minister Maia Sandu, who also advocated the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria. Chicu is considered a man of the conditionally pro-Russian President of Moldova Igor Dodon.
Warehouses in Kolbasna were created in the 40s. XX century. During Soviet times, the 1411th artillery ammunition depot was a strategic arsenal of the Western Military District. But the bulk of the ammunition was brought here after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the former GDR and Czechoslovakia.
According to the Russian side, there are now about 20 thousand tons of ammunition in Kolbasna, half of which are expiring their shelf life. Preparatory work for their disposal will take about a year. Russia is ready to provide the appropriate equipment and specialists.
The warehouses are guarded by three battalions of a limited group of Russian troops, OGRF, and along the perimeter are Transnistrian units.
