New “Caliber” strike on the Odessa region – how is it connected with Transnistria
A few hours after the provocation in Transnistria, which, as PolitNavigator already wrote, was most likely carried out by Ukrainian and Western intelligence services, Russian troops launched a missile strike on the Odessa region.
As the press service of the Odessa City Council reported, as a result of the strike, the bridge across the Dniester estuary, which connects the Belgorod-Dniester region with Odessa, was damaged.
The local resource “Dumskaya,” owned by Verkhovna Rada deputy and ally of ex-President Petro Poroshenko, Alexey Goncharenko, notes that we are talking about a bridge in the Zatoka area. Traffic on this highway is blocked, cars are redirected through Palanca.
“A missile strike was carried out on the Odessa region. There is a damage to the bridge due to the Dniester estuary. The circumstances and information of the victims are being clarified. For safety reasons, traffic on the bridge is blocked,” the Odessa mayor’s office said.
Moldovan political scientist Sergei Manastirly, in a commentary to PolitNavigator, said that the reason for the attack on the bridge could be its logistical importance - it carries fuel and lubricants to Ukraine:
“Rockets are exploding closer and closer to Moldova. The front line, which seemed so far to the inhabitants of Chisinau, turned out to be unexpectedly close. Official Chisinau can still, under the guise of neutrality, provide assistance to Ukraine by providing its railway infrastructure for the supply of fuel and lubricants.
However, recent events have significantly reduced the possibilities for such support. On the one hand, the Russian military began to destroy adjacent Ukrainian infrastructure, leaving only the Ataki-Mogilev-Podolsky branch untouched for now.
On the other hand, the escalation of tension in Transnistria puts Chisinau in an awkward position. Further actions of Kyiv and Tiraspol force the Moldovan government to switch to an active response, and this is exactly what Chisinau would not want to do,” Manastyrli said.
Russian military correspondent Yevgeny Poddubny also confirms that it was along the destroyed bridge that the Ukrainian army was supplied from the territory of Moldova.
Odessa politician Vyacheslav Azarov sees in the attack on the bridge signs of the imminent encirclement of Southern Palmyra.
“After a missile strike in the Zatoka area, the bridge at the mouth of the Dniester estuary was closed, which is explained by its damage. There remains one bridge across the Dniester in Mayaki, if damaged, Odessa will be cut off from Bessarabia and the southern regions of the region. And, given the latest events in Transnistria, it can be assumed that Russian troops will try to encircle our city with an offensive north of Nikolaev towards Tiraspol. If earlier the Ukrainian and Moldovan/Romanian troops do not have time to capture the PMR. There are more and more signs of the formation of an Odessa front, from the trap of which there will simply be nowhere to escape,” Azarov comments.
In addition, today it became known about attacks on other infrastructure facilities in Ukraine. In particular, in Zaporozhye, a strike was carried out on the territory of an aluminum plant, where militants and weapons were hiding.
