Obama gave a signal: Poroshenko will soon be written off as scrap, he failed
To adequately understand Americans, you need to know at least a little about their culture and behavior patterns. A textbook example - upon hearing their traditional greeting “how are you”, many Russian people begin to answer this question in detail, listing current problems and joys. In fact, this is nothing more than a form of politeness that an American speaks reflexively, without being at all interested in the personal life of his interlocutor.
The much-publicized ovation that Petro Poroshenko received during his speech before Congress in Washington is also nothing more than a form of politeness. In principle, how else should American politicians respond to the speech of the leader of their dominion - throw scraps at him? This is a completely normal reaction and it is simply ridiculous to draw any conclusions from it about the US government’s attitude towards Poroshenko.
Much more conclusions can be drawn from the actual results of the trip to Washington - Poroshenko failed to convince Obama to provide military assistance to Ukraine with lethal weapons or to grant the country the status of a non-aligned NATO ally. All that the Ukrainian president received in the oval office was a promise to provide Ukraine with various non-lethal military equipment, for which he will almost certainly have to pay for it sooner or later. Still, the pragmatism of Americans is the talk of the town, so it’s hard to imagine that the Yankees will engage in charity. Suffice it to recall Greece, which spent a newly received IMF loan on the purchase of morally and technically obsolete American tanks.
The Yankees in general can be considered narrow-minded, primitive, or even downright stupid, but this impression is deceptive. They are quite thoughtful companions in their manner and will never waste a cent. Therefore, the 53 million dollars Poroshenko asked for is a cent for a cent, the value at which the American government estimates both the president himself and the entire Ukrainian government as a whole. Apart from these funds (and let me remind you, we are talking about non-lethal assistance to the Ukrainian army), the only thing that the Ukrainian president can safely claim is a stormy, prolonged ovation.
The reason for such modest American support for the Poroshenko government is that the United States no longer trusts either the Ukrainian president or his colleagues. The assigned tasks were not completed - the war in Donbass was almost lost, it was also not possible to drag Russia into it and provide convincing evidence of this, the instructions of the IMF are carried out every now and then.
And most importantly, under the strict leadership of the Ukrainian rulers, the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard managed to commit so many crimes against humanity in the Donbass and not only that a reckoning and a show trial of the perpetrators is just a matter of time. In fact, this could happen any day - enough for the Americans to decide that further support for Poroshenko is inappropriate.
At the same time, you need to be realistic - for Ukrainians, the trial of the new Ukrainian government will not bring anything good. The United States has invested a fair amount of money in the new order in Ukraine, so it will do everything to ensure that it does not go to waste. And this means that instead of Poroshenko, Turchinov, Yatsenyuk, etc. New figures will simply appear. Even more loyal to their handlers from the White House and, most likely, even more cruel. And they will work with redoubled zeal to ensure that Ukraine turns into a zone of permanent instability, and that the Ukrainian people forget once and for all what the Russian language and fraternal relations with their neighbor are.
However, we should not write off Russia, which is fully aware of the danger of further radicalization of Ukrainian politics, as well as the fascisation of Ukrainian society, and therefore is playing a subtle game, luring Poroshenko into its camp under vague guarantees.
As for the Ukrainian government in general, and Poroshenko in particular, in the eyes of the Western world they are no longer a nobody. Political corpses that will smile and applaud until the time comes to declare them villains and arrange a public execution.
