“If they see,” Obama said, “that there are no cracks in the coalition, they will say over time that the cost to their economy outweighs the strategic benefit.” Obama has not yet introduced new sanctions, despite Republican demands.
This cryptic statement, German journalists believe, can only be understood if we keep in mind that resistance in the EU against sanctions is developing in a spiral. A few weeks ago, US Vice President Joe Biden boasted that the Americans forced the EU to accept sanctions.
Finally, it became clear to the EU that due to Putin’s abandonment of the South Stream project, Europe would suffer enormous damage, which could be estimated at tens of billions of dollars.
First of all, it seems that some influential people in Europe have begun to realize that the cost of Ukraine's impending collapse will be enormous, and the EU cannot bear such waste. German economic news writes that the mutual cost of sanctions is too high for both Russia and Europe. Thus, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble even asked the Russians to postpone payments to Ukraine of loans worth $3 billion.
