He noted that the agreements with Obama do not include the supply of heavy weapons, adding that Ukraine could receive weapons from other countries. According to Poroshenko, he asked Obama for “a serious increase in defense and security cooperation with the United States, and President Obama said yes,” writes RBC.
Speaking about the status of an ally outside of NATO, Poroshenko explained Obama’s refusal by saying that relations between the United States and Ukraine “already have a special status,” and the level of interaction between the two countries is “significantly higher than that required by the status of an ally outside of NATO.”
Poroshenko stressed that he is satisfied with the negotiations with the American president.
Obama, following the results of negotiations with Poroshenko, said that the United States is ready to provide Ukraine with another tranche of financial assistance in the amount of $53 million (of which $46 million will be used to strengthen defense capabilities, $7 million for humanitarian needs).
