The agency reports that Yatsenyuk’s visit to the United States takes place against the backdrop of a declining economy and an uprising of nationalist battalions in the West of the country. A day earlier, the International Monetary Fund continued to insist that Ukraine must “stay the same course” or face the threat of receiving a lending package from the fund.
Yatsenyuk commented on the adoption of a law on the restructuring of foreign currency loans for the population, which was sharply opposed by the IMF and representatives of the American government. “There are populists in every parliament. Sometimes they look like lunatics,” Yatsenyuk told The Associated Press.
At the White House, US President Barack Obama reiterated the need for Ukraine to adhere to austerity measures during a meeting on Monday with Yatsenyuk and Vice President Joe Biden. The White House, Obama and Biden said, welcomed "a strong stance against populist measures that could undermine Ukraine's financial stability."
