Barack Obama pointed out the fragility of American democracy and the growing influence of representatives of nationalist organizations. As the former US President noted, similar processes took place in Germany in the 30s, when, despite all the democracy of the Weimar Republic and a huge layer of cultural and scientific achievements, Adolf Hitler was able to come to power. Obama also recalled that 60 million people died while the Nazi leader was in power, and called for these victims not to be forgotten.
Despite the fact that the ex-president did not name specific people whose actions could lead to a similar situation in the United States, according to the American media, he was talking about Donald Trump. In particular, the former American leader could be referring to the Republican slogan “Make America Great Again” and Trump’s immigration policy.
