Vice Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Maidan militant, Andrei Parubiy said in an interview with USA TODAY that official American authorities should ignore the meeting with President Putin. The American authorities themselves did not notice this statement: Obama and Putin will meet in New York next week.

Reuters reports that the White House has insisted on a meeting that will focus on eastern Ukraine. Moscow, however, has said that the main focus will be on Syria, where Russia is supplying weapons to the legitimate government of Bashar al-Assad.

The agency quotes Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov as telling reporters: "Of course, the main topic will be Syria." Answering the question whether Ukraine would be discussed, he said: “Well, if time permits.”

The leaders will be in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly on Monday morning. Peskov said the meeting would take place after Putin's speech.
