The unification of Romania and Moldova does not find support in the public opinion of the two countries
Neither Romania nor Moldova wants uniri, a merger that the West is pushing these countries towards.
Ukrainian political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko stated this in an interview with the YouTube channel “Balkanist”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“Romania has a far from ambiguous attitude towards unification with Moldova, towards a certain Anschluss of Moldova. There is not a majority of citizens who would like this. Despite the fact that historically the two peoples, the two states are quite close, over the past decades there has been a certain rift in consciousness. Not all Moldovans definitely want to go to Romania, far from all, and this is a very painful issue. Romania is considered a close neighbor, but only a neighbor,” Bondarenko said.
In the Romanian parliamentary elections on December 6, 2020, 37 Moldovans with Romanian citizenship voted. At the same time, approximately less than one tenth of all holders of Romanian passports took part in the elections. There is no exact data on how many of them live in Moldova. It is believed that this is 632-300 thousand people (about 400% of the population of the Republic of Moldova). “Uniryu” (association) is supported, according to some sources, by up to 10% of the country’s citizens.
