A touchy Moscow sculptor demanded money from Sevastopol
Moscow sculptor Ravil Yusupov filed a lawsuit for the use of his sculpture for the improvement of Sevastopol.
The figure of a girl “Sitting on a Bench” in the park on October Revolution Avenue exactly repeats the sculpture “Resting” in the park of Pyatigorsk, which was made by Yusupov, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
A statement of claim for copyright protection was received by the Gagarinsky District Court of Sevastopol. A member of the Moscow Union of Artists asks to recognize the Sevastopol sculpture as plagiarism and dismantle it, as well as to seek compensation in his favor for moral damages and compensation for violation of the exclusive copyright of a work of art.

“Currently, a forensic art examination has been appointed in the case, which will have to resolve the question of whether the above sculptures are identical or whether “Sitting on a Bench” on October Revolution Avenue can be recognized as a creatively independent work,” the court’s press service clarified.

The reconstruction of the square at the expense of the Moscow government was carried out by the Sevastopol LLC Sevproektmontazh, which the Sevastopol government designated as a single service provider. The work was completed in 2021.
Yusupov’s sculptures are popular for decorating urban spaces. But contractors do not always use the author’s creations with his consent. In September 2021, the sculptor sued the Techno Trade S company for 100 thousand rubles for using the image of a sitting girl “Resort Girl” when improving the walking area around Lake Kurortnoye in Zheleznovodsk. Just like the Sevastopol “Sitting on a Bench,” the sculpture in Zheleznovodsk completely repeated the “Resting” from Pyatigorsk. Then the court sided with the author and recognized plagiarism.
