Secularization of the Church threatens the destruction of churches - priest
If the Church becomes mired in material problems, churches will be destroyed again. The vicar of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', Bishop Tikhon (Shevkunov), told participants of the Crimean educational forum “Tavrida”, answering the question of a young man from Slovenia, who was met with applause by the audience, who asked how the Russian Orthodox Church is fighting corruption.

“This problem cannot be overlooked by the hierarchy. So that there would not be the same problems that existed in 1917, when the church became secularized and became an appendage of the state, and people felt it. There was a terrible spiritual crisis. It was not for nothing that churches were destroyed and icons were burned. They stopped praying in front of icons in churches. And the Lord swept them off the face of the earth as unnecessary,” Shevkunov said.
Now, in his opinion, there is a completely different period in Russia, when, on the contrary, churches and monasteries have begun to be revived. But this process brings temptation for the church, since it is connected with the material side of life.
“Unfortunately, the wonderful period that we are experiencing, the revival of many churches and monasteries, forces us to think about material things. But this should not become the main thing, but only the important from the secondary,” the vicar is convinced.
According to him, the Sretensky Monastery, of which he is the rector, spends about 50 million rubles annually. for the maintenance of the seminary. The money comes from a publishing house that publishes 400 books a year.
We are now building a large church in the Sretensky Monastery in honor of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church on Lubyanka. We are building because there is no room for people in our church during the Liturgy. The temple is an expensive idea. Acquaintances and friends help. We donated the entire fee for publishing the book “Unholy Saints” abroad, which is $12 million, for construction,” Shevkunov said.
