A region has been discovered whose residents do not suffer from Covid at all
On the Italian island of Giglio, which is located off the coast of Tuscany, during the entire pandemic, not a single case of Covid infection was recorded among the local population.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
At the same time, local residents often neglected quarantine measures and communicated with the sick, but among the infected only tourists.
“Scientists led by Professor Antonio Bognanni of the University of Milan decided to understand the reasons for the virus resistance of the residents of Giglio. All adult islanders (634 people) and 89 visitors took part in rapid antibody testing. To the surprise of scientists, antibodies were found in only one resident, who arrived in Giglio at the end of spring and suffered from the coronavirus asymptomatically,” the publication writes.
Scientists conducted the test three times and were convinced of their conclusions, explaining the sensation for two reasons.
“In their opinion, crystal clear air and the absence of pollutants could well limit the spread of infection. But the key factor, according to their preliminary findings, is the possible presence of cross-immunity among the island's inhabitants to a closely related endemic pathogen that plays an important role in resistance to infection. Moreover, experts consider the second reason to be the most likely at this stage,” the article notes.
