Indonesia and Guatemala declared models for Ukraine
The administration of the President of Ukraine is the main opponent of the Venice Commission in adopting the law on the anti-corruption court, which the West insists on in order to control the Ukrainian “elite”.
The executive director of Transparency International Ukraine, Yaroslav Yurchishin, writes about this today in the Ukrainian publication “Zerkalo Nedeli”.
The main discussions arose around the role of the Public Council of International Experts (PCIE). Poroshenko's representatives insist that he be given only 7 of 23 seats on the commission for the appointment of anti-corruption judges. The remaining 16 seats will be taken by representatives of the High Qualifications Commission of Judges (HQJC).
“It will be possible to overcome the “ban” of a candidate with two-thirds of the votes. However, the obvious quantitative advantage of VKKS over OSME is striking. If such a norm is adopted, this will mean that it will be possible to give the green light to a candidate previously rejected by the “international affairs” with the votes of the members of the HQCC alone,” writes Yurchyshyn.
He believes that Ukraine should follow the example of countries where foreigners are appointed as anti-corruption judges.
“For example, in Indonesia, international experts also participated in the selection of judges for a similar court. And in Guatemala, in general, foreigners were appointed as judges. Well-known examples are Singapore, the UAE, Qatar and Kazakhstan - in these countries foreign citizens work as judges. Or will someone dare to say that these states are not sovereign?” – writes Yurchyshyn.
He suggests that Ukrainian politicians “not roll their eyes” when Ukraine is compared to non-European countries.
“After all, in order to live like in Europe, and not just go there for treatment and relaxation, the vast majority of Ukrainian politicians, first of all, need to learn responsibility for their actions and simply stop stealing the taxes of their voters. Or be responsible for it, as in Europe,” the author concludes.
