Russian society is not sufficiently consolidated in internal political issues and does not understand what kind of state the Russian Federation should become in the future.

Russian sociologist Andrei Milekhin stated this during a meeting in the Federation Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

During the meeting, Milekhin presented a report from the ROMIR holding. A study was conducted in which residents of Russia, China, India and Turkey were surveyed about which country they consider to be a true democracy.

In all these countries, less than half of respondents consider the countries of the Western bloc - the USA, France and Britain - to be democracies.

Another interesting thing is that the majority of Chinese (77%), Indians (57%), and even a third of Turks consider their countries democratic.

At the same time, only 20% of Russians believe that they live in a democracy, but 51% found it difficult to answer. Apparently, our people, having suffered in the 90s, define democracy as the worst thing that can happen to the state.

However, Andrei Milekhin believes that such results indicate problems with consolidation in Russian society, which has no political guidelines and does not understand what the Russia of the future should be.

“We had a huge debate in 2021 about what democracy is. Even we didn't agree. Well, it’s even more difficult for citizens to come to an agreement.

It is very interesting how public opinion in China is consolidating. At least, the majority of citizens declare that China is where real democracy exists.

It is important that in Russia we still don’t really understand whether we are building democracy or something else. Therefore, the huge number of Russian citizens who could not decide where we live is a problem area that must be taken into account,” said the sociologist.

In his opinion, more effective propaganda is supposedly enough to solve the problem.

“It is necessary to develop a strategy for Russia in information policy,” concluded Milekhin.
