Odessa was on the verge of a man-made disaster
For two decades, no one has been properly caring for the old dam of the Khadzhibey Estuary, which is located near Odessa and could be broken at any moment.
MP from OPZZH Tatyana Plachkova announced this during a briefing in the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Each of you knows what the Khadzhibey Estuary is. This is the northwestern part of the Black Sea, 560 million cubic meters of water, with an area of 112 square kilometers. Everyone understands the importance of the dam that holds this entire body of water. And for almost twenty years no one has been addressing the issue of this dam. But the dam is holding up at random.
In the event of its breakthrough, part of the city of Odessa - the Suvorovsky district, the central part - will be destroyed or flooded. Unfortunately, again, no one is addressing this issue. More than 50 enterprises, the Odessa thermal power plant, the family medicine center, many other enterprises and many citizens may be affected,” she said.
According to Plachkova, a man-made and environmental disaster could occur near Odessa, and part of the city would be under water. However, local authorities, as well as specialized enterprises, are withdrawing themselves from solving the problem.
“In fact, a man-made and environmental disaster could occur. Because there is a threat of untreated wastewater entering the Black Sea. But that's not all. The worst thing is that today the mayor’s office says that it is unclear who owns the dam. Ukravtodor also states that it has nothing to do with this dam, and therefore is also not involved in its repair,” the deputy concluded.
