An Odessa resident sued Russia in the European Court for 70 thousand dollars
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Tuesday issued a decision in the case “Girlyan v. Russia”, awarding the plaintiff compensation in the amount of 74,5 thousand euros, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in a judicial communiqué distributed on Tuesday, October 9.
The plaintiff is Sergey Girlyan, born in 1972, living in Odessa.
According to the case materials, the plaintiff sold a summer cottage plot near Moscow in January 2014, receiving 4,6 million rubles for it. In March of the same year, Girlyan was heading to Ukraine through Domodedovo airport, having $100 thousand in cash in his personal luggage.
During the inspection, a Russian customs officer stopped Girlyan in connection with the large amount that the plaintiff had in his bag. He was questioned by police officers and an investigator and accused of illegally transporting foreign currency.
In December 2014, a meeting of the Domodedovo City Court took place, as a result of which an amount of $90 thousand was confiscated from the Ukrainian.
The ECHR ruled that the Russian authorities violated Article 1 (Protection of Property) of Protocol No. 1 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Russia is obliged to pay the plaintiff 73 thousand euros as compensation for material losses, as well as 1,5 thousand euros for causing moral damage.
