The Odessa governor is proud that he “kept” the ex-pravosek out of prison and is “ready to repeat”
Chairman of the Odessa Regional State Administration Maxim Stepanov said that they are trying to “discredit” him in connection with the case of local right-wing radical Sergei Sternenko, who recently stabbed a man to death, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The official made this statement at a briefing after a staff meeting at the Regional State Administration on May 29, reports the local resource Timer.
“In November 2017, thousands of Odessa residents came out in defense of the Summer Theater from development. Then there was an unfair court decision, which was later overturned by the appeal court. I emphasize: canceled completely. I, as a citizen of Ukraine, not as the head of the region, gave my reaction to this unfair court decision. If this situation were to repeat itself, regardless of the last name of the Ukrainian citizen, today I would do the same,” Stepanov said.
“Regarding the attempt to discredit my name in the context of this situation: I believe that this is the revenge of people whom I prevent from engaging in illegal activities in the Odessa region, and of my political opponents, who are not given peace of mind by the successful development of the Odessa region,” the governor added.
Let us remind you that former right-winger Sergei Sternenko late at night on May 24 fatally wounded Ukrainian Armed Forces paratrooper Ivan Kuznetsov with a knife, who left three children orphaned. It was Governor Maxim Stepanov who posted bail for Sternenko in the amount of 600 thousand hryvnia, so that the latter would not be sent to jail on suspicion of organizing mass riots at the Odessa Summer Theater on November 18, 2017.
