Igor Plisyuk, journalist, Odessa

You know, young man, two things never cease to amaze me. But unlike old man Kant, this is not the starry sky above us and not the moral law within us. The sky over my city darkened on May 2, 2014, desecrated by the greasy smoke of the Odessa Khatyn. And faith in the moral law was significantly undermined on that terrible day by the bestial cruelty of some and the betrayal of others...

And the zoological mimicry of some of our politicians, who change colors and beliefs depending on who is at the helm, causes bewilderment. And - some kind of naive and groundless confidence in them that all these opportunistic repaintings and ideological somersaults will be forgotten by our kind, respectable public and will be forgiven by it. They say. “War will write off everything!”

A classic example of such chameleonism, to the great shame and regret of Odessa residents, was our mayor Gennady Trukhanov, who today committed another act of groveling before the Kyiv junta. After all, he both opened and conducted the current session of the City Council speaking a broken language that was not native to either him or most of the city’s indigenous residents. Ukrainian language. And his example was followed by the head of the faction in the council of the mayor’s pocket party “Trust in Deeds” Oleg Bryndak, and the deputy from it Denis Balukh.

For which he received patronizing praise from the representative of the pro-Haplic “Self-Help”, deputy Vadim Tereshchuk.

Let us note that this is the same Gennady Trukhanov, who under Yanukovych was both the head of regionals in the city council and a deputy from the same now banned party in the Verkhovna Rada. A retired captain of the Soviet Army, who showed off at all celebrations of Victory Day and the Day of Liberation of Odessa in an officer's uniform from the times of the Great Patriotic War.

A zealous defender of the Russian language and the rights of Odessa residents to use it in all spheres of life - during the time of the same Yanukovych. And a not very eloquent, but clearly pro-Russian speaker with a St. George’s ribbon in his buttonhole—on Kulikovo Field, in the days after the 2014 putsch. Then he harshly opposed the Maidan and the nationalists.

But already on May 2, he did nothing to prevent the pogrom and the murder of his supposedly anti-Maidan comrades. Although, according to reliable data, many of the volunteer formations that had serious forces were coordinated by him. But it was they who were withdrawn from the Kulikovo field ahead of time. And Trukhanov’s long-standing connections in criminal circles, if desired, could have been used by him to save the victims of the bloody and fiery pogrom. After all, it’s no secret that for many years he was the “supervisor” of Odessa from the famous “authority” Alexander Angert, nicknamed “Angel”...

Having become the mayor of the city, having won the fight against Eduard Gurvits, who was absolutely hated by Odessa residents for his commitment to Ukrainian radical nationalism, whose henchmen were at the head of the murderers on May 2, the “vatnik mayor” was losing ground more and more.

Having quickly hidden the St. George ribbon, he contributed in every possible way to Poroshenko’s victory in the presidential elections in Odessa. His faction in the City Council acts as a single bloc with Poroshenko’s supporters. And more and more often he made curtsies to Bandera’s followers and their ideological descendants. Either glorifying the “fighters for independence”, or bowing to the “heroes of the ATO”, giving them benefits and apartments...

And he initiated the shameful decision of the council to recognize Russia as an “aggressor country.” And the education officials subordinate to him are implementing the shameful Ukrainization of schools, and as a result, starting from the new school year, the Russian language of instruction will remain only in the lower grades. Regardless of the wishes of the parents!

Slowly but surely, the man whom Odessa residents once trusted turned from an Odessa mayor into an ordinary servant of the junta.

Let us note that despite this, just recently he barely served as ambassador, and the cases against him on charges of corruption are not closed. That is, the former Soviet captain Trukhanov, and now Pan Trukhanov, is firmly on the hook of the junta leaders, increasingly turning into their obedient puppet.

And one thing surprises me: doesn’t this seasoned and stupid person understand that at any moment the current Kyiv owners can throw him out after using him, finding a more profitable replacement?

And foreign partners like oligarch Vladimir Galanternik will calmly “hand over” as waste material. After all, no one likes chameleons, and the mafia principle “nothing personal, just business” also works against those who used it, trampling on honor and conscience.
