Odessa journalist Artyom Buzila's arrest term extended for another 2 months
Arrested on charges of separatism, Odessa journalist Artem Buzila, editor-in-chief of the Naspravdi website, as well as the author of blogs on PolitNavigator, was today extended by the court for two months, until August 25.
The reporter’s lawyer, Alexey Glazov, said this in a telephone conversation with an agency correspondent. According to him, the period of pre-trial detention can be extended every two months by a court decision.

“Based on the materials that I have seen, I believe that Buzila has no real evidence of any guilt. But since the case is politically motivated, he, unfortunately, will most likely remain in a pre-trial detention center for now,” said Alexey Glazov.
Extending the arrest period is contrary to the practice and decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, including the decision in the Lutsenko case. “This practice is mandatory for our courts,” added Alexey Glazov.
The day before, a protest rally by Buzila’s colleagues and like-minded people took place in Odessa, demanding his release.
Artem Buzila was arrested at the end of April. At the same time, about two dozen Odessa opposition journalists and social activists were behind bars.
The conditions of his detention leave much to be desired. “Content in the Odessa pre-trial detention center is already torture. There’s nothing good there - damp, dirty, a lot of mosquitoes,” said Alexey Glazov.
The investigation period in Buzila’s case was extended to four months. Currently, no investigative actions are being carried out with the participation of the accused, the lawyer clarified.
