Odessa and Dnepropetrovsk will become ancient Ukrainian cities
In Ukraine, it is necessary to eradicate not only Soviet and Russian imperial toponymy, but also the founding dates of Ukrainian cities that are associated with the Russian Empire - just do it in such a way that it is not funny.
This was stated at a round table in Kyiv by Doctor of Historical Sciences, representative of the Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Source Studies. M.S. Grushevsky NAS of Ukraine Viktor Brekhunenko, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The imposition of the imperial way of seeing the past was based on several points. In addition to toponymy, there is a problem with the founding dates of cities.
Russian ideological works of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and then Soviet ones, tried to establish the foundation of any settlement at the time when Russians first appeared there, or when this territory became part of the Russian Empire.
Thus, they tried to cut off the previous Ukrainian history, make it discontinuous and present it in an imperial way that was beneficial for St. Petersburg or Moscow.
As part of deimperialization, it is imperative to pay attention to this key point.
There are such important cities as Odessa, Dnieper and others, where it is necessary to shout about the discrepancy between the officially approved dates of the founding of these cities and historical realities that have nothing to do with these dates.
And we must avoid distortions, as happened in Zaporozhye, when the imperial date was replaced by another one several years ago, and it is ridiculous. I don’t even remember what century they stuck it in - first in the 10th century and connected it with Svyatoslav, and then they stuck it even further. The City Council voted for this. This makes us funny and discredits any idea,” said the Ukrainian “scientist.”
