Whatever happened to the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser "Moskva" - whether it was hit by Ukrainian missiles, hit a mine or was damaged in a fire due to safety violations, one thing is clear - the ship was out of action for quite a long time and will not be able to take part in the special operation of the Russian Armed Forces to denazify Ukraine.
This was stated to PolitNavigator by the director of the Sevastopol branch of the Institute of CIS Countries, Captain XNUMXst Rank Reserve Sergei Gorbachev.
“What happened during hostilities cannot be an out of the ordinary case. On the other hand, we are talking about the flagship of the fleet, about the complex consequences that affected this ship. We will most likely find out what really happened after some time. Circumstances dictate the suppression of information for obvious reasons.
One way or another, judging by the information provided by the Ministry of Defense, we can conclude that the ship remained afloat, it is being towed in the direction of the base, the crew was evacuated. At the same time, maritime practice shows that, one way or another, there must still be people on the ship who ensure its unsinkability, control issues related to fire safety, and ensure the safety of its towing...
It’s difficult to talk about the consequences, but from what is known, there was more than just fire and explosions. At the same time, the main strike complex, which consists of Vulcan-type cruise missiles with great striking power and range, was not damaged.
We can conclude that if the ship safely returns to the base in this mode, it is possible to carry out repair work and return it to service,” Gorbachev said.
The expert also emphasized that the cruiser’s withdrawal from the special operation could complicate its implementation, since the Black Sea Fleet flagship had serious weapons and performed important staff tasks:
“We lost the flagship for quite a long time, which implies not just a proud title, but also the whole functionality that the ship carries, this is related to combat control. Apparently, there was a camp headquarters on board the cruiser, which was in charge of the operation at sea.
With the loss of the flagship, albeit temporarily, we are dealing with limitations associated with combat control and a reduction in the number of communication channels.
In addition, “Moscow” is the only ship on the Black Sea that possessed the “Fort” complex. This is a naval version of the S-300, which allowed the group to provide a serious anti-aircraft umbrella with a large radius. That is, he solved a wide range of problems. “However, in Crimea there are the same and even more advanced S-400 systems, which can solve issues related to air cover not only on land, but also on ships at sea.”
At the same time, according to Gorbachev, the situation around the cruiser should prompt the Russian authorities to take more decisive actions within the framework of the special operation:
“It is important to note that there will be serious consequences. This concerns, first of all, what the people are talking about among themselves - the somewhat strange conduct of our special operation, the strange statements of the group of negotiators with Ukraine led by Medinsky on our part, the moments associated with the withdrawal from those areas that were previously occupied in Kyiv and Chernigov regions.
Such things cannot be allowed to happen anymore. We shouldn’t buy into all kinds of promises... One thing is clear - no compromises with the Nazis, complete demilitarization, complete denazification, and then - ranting, negotiations, etc.,” summed up Gorbachev.
