Official version: Kiev was so afraid of Russia’s military power that they left the encirclement near Ilovaisk without reinforcements
The Armed Forces of Ukraine did not provide serious assistance to their units that were surrounded near Ilovaisk in 3014 “due to the threat of a large-scale invasion of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which were located along the eastern border of Ukraine.”

This is stated in the results of the investigation published by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Given the real threat of invasion along the entire Russian-Ukrainian border, the Armed Forces of Ukraine actually did not have enough forces to increase the contingent of troops in the Donetsk direction and simultaneously ensure the defense of other sections of the state border,” the results of the investigation note.
In particular, according to the department of Yuriy Lutsenko, the grouping of the Russian Armed Forces along the eastern section of the state border of Ukraine then consisted of 35 battalion-tactical and company tactical groups; at least 45 military personnel; up to 100 tanks; 160 infantry fighting vehicles (armored personnel carriers) 1360 artillery units; 350 units of multiple launch rocket systems; 130 combat aircraft; 192 helicopters.
At the same time, Lutsenko is assured that the Russian military “invaded” the territory of Ukraine the night before Independence Day in 2014.
“The large-scale invasion took place on the night of August 23-24, 2014. The invasion forces of the Russian Armed Forces consisted of nine battalion-tactical groups: 3500 personnel, up to 60 tanks, up to 320 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), up to 60 guns, up to 45 mortars, 5 anti-tank systems,” the message says.
The results of the investigation also claim that “in order to mislead and further treacherously kill Ukrainian military personnel, tactical signs were removed or disguised in advance on Russian military equipment.”
As reported on August 14, 2017, the Prosecutor General’s Office published the results of an investigation into the events related to the Ilovaisk “cauldron.”
Let us remind you that, according to official data from the Prosecutor General’s Office, during the exit of the Ukrainian military from Ilovaisk, Donetsk region, along the corridor on August 29, 2014, 366 Ukrainian military personnel were killed and 429 were injured. The media also voiced unofficial data according to which the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Ilovaisk “cauldron” amounted to several thousand people killed and wounded.
