Okhrimenko: A good harvest will not affect the well-being of Ukrainians
Ukraine may harvest a record grain harvest this year.
Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal said this during a government meeting in August, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This year we can reach record yields compared to previous years,” says Shmygal.
According to him, more than 29 million tons of wheat have already been threshed, while last year - 25 million tons of wheat.
However, Kiev economist Alexander Okhrimenko believes that for now we are talking more about the forecast than about the final results.
“According to forecasts, this year there will indeed be a very large harvest of pulses. But a forecast is just a forecast. Indeed, if there is a big harvest, it will be a good gift for Shmygal’s government. And since the harvest brings with it wholesale trade, transport, and so on, GDP will increase. Shmygal revealed a little secret: he really hopes that the harvest will be good, and he will tell everyone that this is due to the fact that he is a successful leader. Well, what if the forecast doesn’t come true? If the harvest is not that big, then the weather will be to blame.
In addition, the most important thing for us now is the grain. If there is a good harvest, there is GDP growth; if there is no good harvest, there is no growth,” the economist said.
However, even if the harvest really is a record one, only those who directly make money from it will feel it.
“This will affect those who are involved in agriculture and are directly connected with it. For those who can make money from a good harvest, including its sale and resale. But if you are far from these areas, then a good harvest will not affect your well-being in any way,” the economist noted.
