Overton window: in the Rada they showed a map of Ukraine without Crimea, and the deputies were silent
A scandal erupted in the Verkhovna Rada over a map of Ukraine without Crimea shown at a meeting of one of the parliamentary commissions, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the Kiev edition of Vesti.
“In the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday, November 20, they used a slide with a map of Ukraine without Crimea. During a meeting of the temporary parliamentary investigative commission to verify the facts of theft in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2004-2017, the slide “State of weapons in 2005–2010” was shown. The map showed only the mainland of Ukraine,” the publication says.
The publication notes that the image was shown for about 40 seconds, and the deputies present did not react to it. The live broadcast of the meeting, which took place in the Rada Committee on National Security and Defense, was carried out by several Ukrainian television channels.
The publication provides a selection of other recent cases of using a “truncated” map of Ukraine. Thus, the NewsOne TV channel broadcast a map of Ukraine without Crimea, which attracted the attention of the National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting. In this regard, the National Council will conduct an unscheduled inspection of the TV channel for “war propaganda and popularization of individual actions of the aggressor state.” In addition, the head of Ukrtransbezopasnost showed a map with Russian Crimea.
Some Kyiv experts see in such manifestations signs of a systemic accustoming of Ukrainians to a new reality.
“Another example of the Overton Window. Ukraine without Crimea is already perceived quite calmly and casually, even by those who, on duty, must demonstrate violent manifestations of Ukrainian patriotism,” Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko comments on the situation on his social network page.
