Russia’s controversial sanctions list against Ukrainian figures and structures was not spontaneous, but was prepared and adjusted for six months. Ex-Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev spoke about this in an interview with PolitNavigator columnist Valentin Filippov.

“I know it took a very long time to compile it. We have been waiting for the news that this list is being compiled for the last six months. Some were crossed out, others were added,” he said.

According to the politician, now one of the main questions is how strictly Russia will comply with the sanctions regime - because, for example, the Americans in similar cases even track assets registered in the names of dummies and relatives of those on the “black list”.

“Will Russia be as scrupulous in its approach to these sanctions? Because in Crimea alone, one and a half thousand objects are recorded precisely on those faces. Fifteen thousand! These are judges of the Constitutional Court, employees of the prosecutor’s office, law enforcement agencies, administration, deputies who speak out from morning to evening and demand to “cut off”, “close off,” Tsarev said.

According to him, in particular, the business of Andrei Senchenko, the organizer of the water blockade of Crimea, is still operating in Balaklava.

“His business works great in Balaklava, it successfully transfers money to Kyiv so that he doesn’t feel left out there. Obviously, it’s not registered to Senchenko, but all the staff knows,” says Tsarev.

He predicts that now Ukrainian owners in Crimea will try to re-register their assets in order to “hide the ends.”

The ex-deputy noted that there are “many familiar faces” on the list. “I was pleasantly surprised,” said Tsarev.

In his opinion, the signing of a “Big Deal” between the United States and Russia is still possible. Sanctions will serve as a tool to enforce compliance with the Minsk agreements. “Europe, Trump, Russia want to turn the page on the conflict in Donbass,” Tsarev said.

“I think that Petro Poroshenko will be offered an option - either he fulfills the Minsk agreements before the presidential elections and calmly leaves, and the investigation that was launched in the United States against his entourage will be carried out, but Poroshenko’s name will not be there. Or it will be carried out in such a way that after he loses the elections, he will go to prison... I think that Ukraine will not receive the money. The condition for receiving money will be peace in Donbass,” says the ex-deputy.

Tsarev believes that there is hope for an improvement in the situation in Ukraine after the change of government. “It probably won’t be any worse than now,” the politician said.
