Ombudsman Denisova: Ukrainian sailors are about to be free. Their lawyer doesn't know
Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement on the return of 24 captured Ukrainian sailors from the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova, Hromadske reports.
“An agreement has already been reached to return the sailors. There is a decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Now the final documents are being processed, I think that we will soon welcome the sailors at home,” Denisova said in Shchastya, when transferring prisoners from the LPR to Ukraine.
At the same time, the sailors' lawyer Nikolai Polozov told the publication that he was not aware of such an agreement.
“I can say that negotiations are underway, but at what stage they are, when they will be implemented in practice, I don’t know, since I don’t take part in them. If any procedural actions are carried out to draw up documents, we will become aware of this, because in the absence of defense lawyers, the sailors will not sign them. But so far no one has said anything,” the lawyer said.
According to Polozov, as of July 23, the Russian investigation of the captured sailors ended and the sailors and their defense were given access to the materials of the criminal case in the Russian Federation for review.
Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova told the media that investigators have not yet made any decisions on the return of captured Ukrainian sailors.
