The Food and Agriculture UN (FAO) hopes that this amount will be enough to provide food for more than 30 million people in 26 countries. Among them are Ukraine, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Haiti, South Sudan and Yemen.
“Unfortunately, in many of these countries, we are seeing both conflict and natural disasters such as drought, and they are making the situation even worse,” said FAO spokesman Dominique Burgeon.
First of all, assistance will be provided to those who live in rural areas and whose lives directly depend on agriculture. FAO staff will, among other things, provide farmers with seeds and agricultural tools, as well as courses on improving production and managing land and water resources.
Those people who urgently need food will be given cash.
“While we saved millions of lives through emergency humanitarian assistance in 2017, millions are still on the brink of starvation. By supporting food production, restoring agriculture, we save people and provide them with opportunities to survive a humanitarian crisis,” said Burgeon.
According to the latest UN report, the number of hungry people has been declining for many years, but recently the figure has begun to rise again. Currently, 815 million people in the world are undernourished.
