The disgraced ex-prime minister of Belarus is afraid to go to Moscow
Former Prime Minister of Belarus Sergei Rumas has been secretly in Kyiv for a month. His house in Minsk was allegedly searched.
This was reported by the nationalist publication Nasha Niva, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“He moved there due to the fact that he could not find an acceptable job in London, and he did not have much savings to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world. It is not yet known exactly where Rumas got a job in Kyiv. But it looks like he is afraid to go to work in Moscow. His wife Zhanna flies to Rumas, but does not stay in Kyiv,” the article says.
The ex-prime minister himself assures that he has no plans to move to Ukraine.
“Yes, indeed, I flew to Kyiv. But no conspiracy theories. This trip is related to the projects I spoke about earlier. There is no talk of moving to Ukraine,” Rumas said in a commentary to Tut.by.
In March, Nasha Niva claimed that Rumas had been nominated as a candidate for the supervisory board of Rosselkhozbank, but was afraid to move to Moscow, since Russia would be obliged to extradite him if a criminal case was initiated against him in Belarus. Rumas himself claims that he has not yet been approved for the position.
“Everything is going according to standard procedures. I have been collaborating with Rosselkhozbank since my days at Belagroprombank and will be glad to work with the professional team of one of the largest banks in Russia,” said Rumas.
In February, Rumas himself told opposition media that he was holding negotiations in London about working with several foreign financial institutions and funds.
Rumas's departure from Belarus took place shortly before Belarusian security forces detained a group of bankers and representatives of commercial structures with whom he had previously worked. At the same time, political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky wrote that Rumas could be in danger of arrest.
