Fearing the anger of Moscow, Chisinau will refrain from harsh demarches against the PMR
Kyiv expert circles, expressing a point of view close to the official one, believe that the creation of Ukrainian-Moldavian checkpoints on the border will hurt Pridnestrovie.
In particular, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Artem Filipenko, head of the research department for the Danube-Black Sea region of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, subordinate to the President of Ukraine, writes about this in an article published by the Kiev online publication Zerkalo Nedeli.
The author shares his opinion on what Ukraine can expect from new government Moldova.
“A separate direction is the creation of joint checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, and in particular on its Transnistrian section. It is clear that such measures aimed at combating “schemes” will hit Transnistria, which is going through hard times, or more precisely, the interests of the business elite in power in this region. At the same time, it is very likely that Chisinau will refrain from harsh demarches regarding Transnistria, so as not to once again irritate Moscow, which already negatively perceived both the coming to power of the pro-European team and some of the steps taken by this team,” the expert believes.
He points out that during recent visit In Chisinau, Deputy Head of the Russian Presidential Administration Dmitry Kozak said: “Russia is ready to help Moldova, but on a mutually beneficial basis, not to the detriment of national interests.”
“Russia’s national interests” is a concept that, as we know, can be interpreted very broadly. Not everyone in Chisinau liked the fact that the deputy head of the administration was received at a very high level: in addition to Maia Sandu herself, the meeting was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration. However, the head of the Ukrainian government is also expected to visit Moldova in the near future. Denis Shmygal intends to arrive in Chisinau to celebrate the 30th anniversary of independence. A good sign for “good people,” Filipenko hopes.
As PolitNavigator reported, President of Moldova Maia Sandu promised Kozak that she wouldn’t organize a blockade of Transnistria.
