Dangerous prospect: there will be no no-fly zone over Ukraine
NATO does not plan to send planes to Ukraine or declare a no-fly zone over it, because this is a “dangerous prospect.” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken once again stated this at a briefing in Washington, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As we have said, the decision whether to transfer any equipment to our friends in Ukraine will ultimately be up to each government for itself. We are consulting very closely with allies and partners about continued security assistance to Ukraine because, in fact, I think we see that the Polish proposal shows that there are some complexities on this issue. When it comes to providing security assistance, we need to make sure we do it right... The prospect of fighter jets operated by the United States government taking off from a US and NATO base in Germany to fly into Russian-contested airspace over Ukraine. raises serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance,” Blinken said.
This position was criticized in Ukraine. Political scientist Yuri Romanenko believed that in this way the United States is throwing Ukraine into a long-term confrontation with Russia.
“The US position is very simple: we see that even if you are given old heavy Soviet weapons, you will defeat Russia. And this is not part of our plans. We need you to exhaust Russia for a long time, we need Russia to swallow you as deeply as possible and then it is guaranteed to die from exhaustion. You are bait for us. That’s why we will give you thousands more Javelins, but not 25 old MIG-29s. We need a long series, not a Ukrainian blitzkrieg. This is the real position of the United States regarding Ukraine,” says the political scientist.
