Dodon's dangerous connections have brought sad results
Member of the ruling Socialist Party of Moldova Stefan Gatcan announced today that he is leaving the faction, thereby finally destroying the parliamentary majority.
The politician wrote about his decision on Facebook, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I am deeply impressed by the courage, dedication and strength with which the new political party Pro Moldova fights for the interests of citizens and the country... With such a professional team, I am sure that we can do a lot of good for Moldova!” Gatcan wrote.
Pro Moldova is a parliamentary group that supports the criminal oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, who fled to the United States last year. Initially, it included 6 politicians most loyal to the former “master of Moldova,” but recently 9 more fighters have joined the group.
At first, these were deputies from the Democratic Party, which was created at one time by Plahotniuc, but decided after his flight to form a coalition with Dodon’s socialists.
The Moldovan parliament is confident that this is a matter of bribery. Moreover, the rates are rising. The fees of the last defectors, according to rumors, exceeded a million dollars.
“From the sidelines of parliament. Gatskana was offered $1.5 lyams and the position of Minister of Health,” wrote socialist MP Bogdan Tsydrya in his Telegram channel.
The last democrat to defect was Euphrosinia Gretu, who was allegedly not even bought, but was blackmailed with her son’s criminal past.
It seemed that the ruling coalition had collapsed, but the situation was saved by independent deputy Alexander Oleinik, elected from... Tiraspol (in Transnistria they do not recognize him as their representative).
Socialists and democrats argued that the resource for Plahotniuc’s corruption had been exhausted, but a weak link had been found. Gatcan became a deputy a few months ago after the by-elections in Hincesti.
He is not, strictly speaking, an orthodox socialist. His nomination is the result of an agreement between the Socialist Party and the mayor of Hincesti, representing the Democratic Party. Now it turns out that Gatcan was once close to Plahotniuc, for whom his betrayal became a matter of technique.
Vlad Plahotniuc and Stefan Gatcan advertise the Plahotniuc Foundation.
Socialists are indignant. They held a noisy picket outside the clinic building owned by the defector, leaving a cemetery wreath under the door. The action was called “funeral of honor.” The inscription “Judas” appeared on the door of Gatcan’s office in parliament.
“To say that this is meanness is to say nothing. But it's better now. All the same, (early) parliamentary elections will put everything in its place. That’s it, guys, stop playing at innocence... Moldova needs early parliamentary elections!”, wrote Advisor to the President of Moldova Ernst Vardanyan in his Telegram channel.
He predicts that Plahotniuc will make his next “purchases” in two pro-European factions, where deputies have already appeared who are ready to leak incriminating evidence from the fugitive oligarch.
“So quickly use your brains (if you have them) and agree on early elections,” Vardanyan advises.
It is noteworthy that the opportunity to hold early elections arose in Moldova at the end of 2019, when the coalition of socialists and the pro-European ACUM bloc collapsed. This unnatural union was created a year ago with the sole purpose of expelling Plahotniuc, who was clinging to power. The architect of the strange coalition, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, openly advised Moldovans: if you can’t work together, go to the polls.
But President Igor Dodon kept making new compromises for the sake of power. First, he handed over the issues of language and history to the pro-Europeans, then he decided to form an alliance with the democrats, knowing about the influence on them of Plahotniuc, who was ready to do anything for revenge.
Dangerous relationships brought sad results.
