Dangerous precedent: The Serbian opposition is “probing” recognition of Kosovo
One of the leaders of the pro-Western opposition Union for Serbia, the current mayor of the small town of Sabac, Nebojsa Zelenovic, found himself at the center of a major scandal. The reason was, at first glance, an ordinary situation - an official issued an order to allocate 10 thousand euros for the purchase of strawberry seedlings. However, the documents mentioned the region of Kosovo, illegally seized by Albanian separatists, as an independent legal state.
As a sign of protest, the faction of the pro-presidential Serbian Progressive Party left the meeting of the municipal parliament in Sabac, Informer reports.
“The document before council members clearly states that the assistance from the city of Šabac goes to a municipality in the “country of Kosovo” and goes on to say that “this initiative is the first of its kind between the two countries.” The current mayor, Nebojsa Zelenovic, acted as the first Serb in history to unequivocally recognize the false state of Kosovo,” the deputies explained.
The party recalled that Zelenovic is one of the leaders of the opposition political organization “Union for Serbia,” and the wording in the document he issued indicates that the pro-Western mayor “did what no Serb did after the battle of Kosovo.”
The deputies noted that they are not against helping the Serbs living in Kosovo and Metohija, and for this it is necessary to allocate amounts much larger than 10 thousand euros, but it is not acceptable for Kosovo to appear in Serbian official documents as an “independent state.”
Zelenovich himself tried to justify himself that the documents were prepared by a certain non-governmental organization working with the Austrian government.
Deputies responded by expressing hope that in the upcoming elections in the spring of 2020, citizens will make the right conclusions about whose interests the current city government represents.
