The celebration of Victory Day in Moldova began late at night. The People's Assembly of Gagauzia suddenly convened for an extraordinary meeting and unanimously adopted a resolution allowing on May 9, 2022 “the wearing of a two- and three-color ribbon of black-yellow or orange-yellow.”

This sudden demarche was directed against the Chisinau authorities, who, represented by the appeal chamber of Comrat (the capital of Gagauzia), suspended the law allowing the St. George ribbon in the autonomy.

Now fines for wearing the St. George ribbon in Gagauzia will not have legal force, explained NSG deputy Gheorghe Leichu. The citizens of the autonomy heard their elected representatives and boldly came to lay flowers in symbols prohibited by the official Chisinau symbols.

Only the Bashkan of Gagauzia, Irina Vlah, did not wear the St. George’s ribbon, although earlier she had promulgated the scandalous law and condemned the bans of the Moldovan authorities.

Her subordinates put on the ribbons.

The official authorities of Moldova at 7 a.m. proceeded to the “Eternity” memorial in Chisinau and laid flowers on a deserted square accompanied by mourning music. Only Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa and Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu took part in the ceremony. President Maia Sandu did not attend the ceremony. Hours later, her administration announced that she was sick. Sandu’s meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who is arriving in Chisinau today, has also been cancelled.

“The fact that Sandu does not participate in the celebration of May 9th means only one thing - she is afraid of the people,” Moldovan journalist Gabriel Calin commented on what was happening in his TG channel.

When the Moldovan authorities moved away from the memorial, thousands of people with flowers, banners and banners flocked to it. Few people wore St. George's ribbons: former President Igor Dodon, deputies from the Communist and Socialist Parties, rare veterans and brave youth.

However, cunning Moldovans found a way to get around the prohibitions.

People came out in orange and black clothes and with the same umbrellas.

Young people carrying a huge banner lined up so that girls in orange T-shirts and boys in black alternated. Images of military awards with St. George ribbons, permitted by the authorities, were actively used.

And the Moldovans took full advantage of the permission to use red flags. A huge Victory Banner was unfurled in the central square. Before Eternity, the Immortal Regiment march and the motor rally were dominated by red flags. And the bravest participants were Russian and Transnistrian. A similar situation was observed in other Moldovan cities.

“The main conclusion of May 9 is that the people of Moldova are law-abiding and resourceful. The St. George ribbon is not allowed - there will be red flags, pioneer ties, Gagarin and a sea of orange and black symbols, but not the ribbon, of course. The authorities divided us into “us” and “strangers”. We are strangers to her, but our own to each other. Thank you to the authorities of Moldova for our unity!” wrote Moldovan television journalist Elena Levitskaya-Pakhomova.

Political scientist Alexander Nosovich believes that it was not so much the pro-Western government of Moldova that suffered defeat, but rather the West that governs it.

“A complete failure of many years of efforts by Western strategic communications specialists to destroy the culture of celebrating May 9 in Moldova! Moldova has been a testing ground for this gigantic influence machine for many years. The political regime there is a grantocracy, the state of the economy is determined by its grant intensity, and the presidency and government are filled with graduates of George Soros programs. And yet - a complete failure. Chisinau today, in celebration of Victory Day, cannot be distinguished from Tiraspol. The two banks of the Dniester came together due to the common value that is May 9,” Nosovich wrote.
