A militiaman from Odessa who bought an advertisement for the SBU program “They are waiting for you at home” received 6 years in prison
A Ukrainian court in the Kiev-controlled part of the Donetsk region convicted a militiaman who joined the DPR army after being beaten by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
A resident of Odessa was drafted into the Ukrainian army in August 2015. With the rank of lieutenant, he was soon sent along with other military personnel to the combat zone in the Donetsk region.
By the end of the year, the resident of Odessa left the military unit and went over to the side of the DPR, where he was accepted into service as a radiotelephone operator in a howitzer-self-propelled artillery battalion with the proud call sign “Odessa”.

A few months later, an Odessa resident was detained at the Georgievka checkpoint by SBU officers while attempting to cross into territory controlled by Kiev. Ukrainian security forces drew attention to the man because he went to the border in military camouflage, moreover, taking with him both documents of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the DPR army.
At the trial, “Odessa” assured that he was returning to Ukraine to take advantage of the SBU program “They are waiting for you at home.”
According to the defendant, in 2014 he fled from the Armed Forces of Ukraine due to beatings from his colleagues. His father, a retired colonel, lived in the DPR with his brother. The latter allegedly handed the deserter over to the DPR authorities, after which the fugitive had to serve in the ranks of the militia.
At the trial, former colleagues of the deserter were questioned, who recalled his penchant for drinking alcohol. In addition, a recording of an interview with “Odessa” during service for the benefit of the DPR was discovered on YouTube.
As a result, the Ukrainian court did not believe the testimony of the colonel’s son and sentenced him to 6 years in prison for “participation in the terrorist organization – DPR.”
