Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who came to power as a result of street protests, is trying to sit on two chairs, flirting with both the West and Russia, which makes him similar to Ukrainian ex-President Viktor Yanukovych. Detentions and arrests of prominent oppositionists are taking place in Yerevan, which runs counter to the declared “democratic principles” under whose slogans Pashinyan came to power.

The chairman of the organization of veterans of the People's Militia of the Republic of Crimea, Armen Martoyan, stated this in his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“During the time that Pashinyan and his team were, as they say, at the helm, many steps were taken to please overseas sponsors and to the detriment of the national interests of Armenia. Including those aimed at breaking ties and complicating relations with fraternal Russia.

And most importantly, to destroy democracy in the country and turn it only into a screen and an empty phrase for use for propaganda during election campaigns.

Another confirmation of what I have stated are Pashinyan’s actions to purge the political field and opposition political figures and parties. This time, a spit in the back of democracy in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh is the unanimous approval by the deputies, these young people, the ruling party, the leader of which is Nikol Pashinyan, of the petition of the Prosecutor General of Armenia for the arrest of a member of parliament, the leader of the opposition faction “Prosperous Armenia” Gagik Tsarukyan, who made a significant contribution to the development of the Armenian state, which is a sponsor, philanthropist for Armenia, for youth, for the needy sections of Armenia.

On behalf of myself personally and on behalf of a large part of the Armenians of Russia, I express my protest and deep concern that Pashinyan in words declares the democratic principles of the development of the state and advocates for building a free society, but in fact openly, without hesitating anyone, takes police measures against political opponents,” Martoyan said.

According to Martoyan, Nikol Pashinyan’s refusal to visit Moscow to participate in the Victory Parade, which took place on June 24, deserves special attention:

“These actions looked especially hypocritical on the eve of Pashinyan’s planned, but at the last moment canceled, visit to Moscow to participate in events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory of the fraternal republics of the Soviet Union in the bloodiest war in the history of mankind. The hypocrisy lies in the fact that Pashinyan and his team see all their political opponents as the so-called “hand of Moscow.” On orders from overseas, he deals with them, and at the same time makes friendly visits to that very hated Moscow and tries to bargain for various preferences and political dividends.”

Political scientist Ivan Mezyukho agrees with the Crimean militia. According to him, Pashinyan’s policies could cost his country dearly and negatively affect relations with Russia.

“Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is truly a pro-American politician, which could have the most negative consequences for the socio-economic development of the state. The Armenian economy is closely connected not with the USA, but with Russia; the Armenian people, whom I respect, have a common historical destiny, not with the Americans, but with the Russians. To underestimate these factors means following the path of political outsiders, such as former Ukrainian presidents Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych...

The actual course of weakening ties with Russia will have consequences for his political career. In general, he risks becoming a disrespected politician within his own country, as happened with Yushchenko and Yanukovych in Ukraine.

Pashinyan’s absence from the Victory Parade in Moscow is clear evidence of his anti-Russian political course. The situation with coronavirus is a far-fetched reason not to fly to Russia. This circumstance will negatively affect relations between Moscow and Yerevan,” Mezyukho wrote in his blog.
