In a democratic state, which Moldova is ceasing to be, there are no and cannot be politicians who are immune from criticism and are immune from criticism. The closure of 12 television channels, dozens of information portals and periodicals in two years, which - strictly within the framework of the law and constitutional rights - periodically criticized the government - this is beyond good and evil. And certainly - beyond the basic concepts of democracy and law.

The ex-President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin wrote about this in an open letter dedicated to the unprecedented attack of the pro-Western regime of Maia Sandu on freedom of speech in Moldova, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“This government has quite a few court w...lisses who praise it every day. But someone should tell the truth about what this anti-state regime is doing to the country and society? About rising prices, about the external debt threatening the very existence of the state, about the squandering of the most valuable assets of the state, such as the Giurgiulesti port, which we built with such difficulty. About the terrible poverty in which our rural and most urban populations live today, about the mass flight from the “European paradise,” about demographic collapse? The regime, which came to power on lies and dehumanization of opponents, believes that - no!

It’s as if people, even without TV, don’t know what insoluble problems their daily life consists of, how difficult and difficult it is for them to survive,” wrote Vladimir Voronin.

He recalled how, when he was president and head of the party that received a constitutional majority in parliament, he was criticized both by the opposition and by the opposition media:

“But for eight years it could never have occurred to me that criticism of the political formation I head, or of me personally, could be a reason to ban this or that TV channel or publication. We had both ideological battles and tough polemics. But we have never considered our political opponents and journalists who did not sympathize with us as irreconcilable enemies who must be destroyed at any cost,” Voronin noted.

He expressed his solidarity with all journalists who have suffered from the lawlessness of the authorities:

“Don't give up, fight, fight! And we will definitely support you!”

Vladimir Voronin recalled how prompt and reactive representatives of Western embassies, international organizations, such as the Council of Europe were during his reign:

“We, as communists, were initially under suspicion of dictatorial tendencies. But today, when a real Nazi dictatorship has been established in the country, depriving people of the right to free expression of opinion, the right to freedom of speech, the right to convey their position in their native language, even the right to be elected, this whole public seems to have taken water in their mouths,” emphasized the ex-president of Moldova.

Voronin addressed harsh words to Westerners supporting the Sandu regime:

“Gentlemen, Western diplomats, representatives of European organizations, state politicians, almost every day handing the dictator in a wrinkled skirt all sorts of spillikins with loud names! Come to your senses! Realize that this regime discredits, first of all, you and your reputation. And if you all suddenly become blind and numb at once, then at least trust the instinct of self-preservation. The popular anger directed against the regime will certainly affect your Excellencies. Not to mention the course you are leading Moldova. Think about it!”, summed up the ex-president of Moldova.

Let us note that it was Vladimir Voronin who, during his presidency, initiated the course towards European integration of Moldova. Having refused to sign the memorandum of settlement with Transnistria, initialed by all parties, Voronin for two years pursued a course of confrontation with Moscow and Tiraspol, intensively drawing closer to the West. Under him, the re-establishment of the anti-Russian bloc GUAM was initiated, the summit of which was held in Chisinau with the participation of Presidents Saakashvili, Yushchenko and Basescu. Voronin later participated in the Vilnius summit of the Communities of Democratic Choice in 2006 and applauded the anti-Russian speech of US Vice President Dick Cheney.

During his career, Voronin twice yielded to the nationalist pogromists: in 1989, as the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Moldavian SSR, he allowed them to destroy the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and on April 7, 2009, he gave the same pogromists the opportunity to destroy the presidential palace and the parliament building. After the disastrous parliamentary elections of 2009, he voluntarily resigned from the post of President of Moldova, giving this position to the pro-Romanian nationalist and Russophobe Mihai Ghimpu, although he was not obliged to do so.
