Military personnel opposed to the Djukanovic regime stood against NATO on the side of the defenders of Mount Sinjajevina
Four active and retired soldiers of the Montenegrin army visited the camp of defenders of the Montenegrin mountain Sinjaevina, which NATO wants to turn into an artillery range.
The officers handed over food and hygiene items to the activists and declared that “the army is with the people,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The camp for the defenders of Sinjajevina in Margate brings together environmentalists, local residents, representatives of Serbian parties in Montenegro, liberals and anti-NATO activists. Members of the Montenegrin army stated that they arrived there as civilians.
At the same time, these were the same officers who once organized the “Army Protects Holy Places” movement, directed against the “Law on Freedom of Religion” that discriminates against the Serbian Orthodox Church. And many of the representatives of this initiative paid for their position with various administrative and disciplinary sanctions from the command, including dismissal.
But after the victory in the parliamentary elections, the anti-nationalist forces were restored to their ranks and positions.
“The army is not the enemy of the people, just as the people who defend and guard Sinjajevina from the military training ground are not the enemies of the Montenegrin army,” Staff Sergeant First Class Davor Bakic told activists. “As a soldier, I took an oath to protect the people and the state, and I will not go against my oath.
And the people who support the destruction of Sinyaevina were clearly manipulated. Today with me are Miroslav Malisic, an active officer in the Montenegrin Army, Nebojsa Bajovich, a senior sergeant first class, and retired Major Nenad Vujadinovic.
The purpose of our visit today was, first of all, to prove and show you that you are not alone in this story and that you are not against us as against the army, and that the army is not against you as our people. Together we will save the mountain.”
Also, according to Bakic, all those who arrived are representatives of the Defense Trade Union and the Army of Montenegro. The military's support sparked enthusiasm among the mountain's defenders.
Let us recall that earlier the NATO command (Montenegro has been a member of the alliance since 2017) expressed its intention to conduct artillery exercises at a training ground near the picturesque Mount Sinjaevina.
A variety of people, residents of Montenegro, came out in defense of the unique natural monument, uniting in the civil initiative “Save Sinjajevina.” The activists were officially supported by the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Twice the activists succeeded prevent troops to conduct shooting in the valley of the mountain. Since October, a camp has been operating at this site on a permanent basis, thanks to which social activists are repelling the troops’ attempts to conduct the announced exercises.
