Footage of the liberated Svyatogorsk and Lavra published
Local residents and monks in the liberated Svyatogorsk DPR told how Ukrainian nationalists on June 5 burned the wooden monastery of All Saints of the Land of the Russian Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra.
This was announced by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense Igor Konashenkov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Eyewitnesses said that as early as June XNUMX, the Ukrainian military came to the territory of the Svyatogorsk Historical and Architectural Reserve in order to examine the area on the high bank in order to place artillery positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the high bank. This would make it possible to conduct direct fire on units of Russian troops located on the other side.
“Knowing well that Russian military personnel do not fire at temple buildings and cultural monuments, Ukrainian nationalists hoped to hide behind the Orthodox shrines of the Lavra as their “shield.” The impudence of Ukrainian nationalists caused indignation among local residents. They demanded that the military leave the territory of the Lavra to prevent its destruction.
By June 4 of this year, during the fighting in Svyatogorsk, the Ukrainian group of troops had already lost control over most of the city. Therefore, the retreating nationalists committed a monstrous provocation,” Konashenkov said.
The nationalists set fire to a wooden hermitage using a heavy machine gun mounted on an armored vehicle with a burst of incendiary ammunition.
At the same time, Konashenkov emphasized that despite the military operations taking place in Svyatogorsk, no damage to historical and Orthodox monuments on the territory of the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra was allowed by Russian military personnel.
The Defense Department also published video footage of the current state of the Svyatogorsk Lavra, which is located on the southern bank of the Seversky Donets
