Yanukovych went on the ice just for fun, the publication writes. For spectacular shots against the sunset background of Cape Khoboy, picturesque cliffs - here they are like a huge beast crouched by the lake. The place chosen for the selfie has been revered on Lake Baikal since ancient times; representatives of various spiritual schools meditate on Khoboy; it is full of shamanic paraphernalia.
According to information provided by the Irkutsk Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, stories from local residents (Novaya has been to Olkhon more than once on Baikal expeditions, we have comrades here), six tourists stayed at a hotel near Kharantsy on March 20, and in the evening they went out onto the ice of the Small Sea - right behind the settlement there is a descent - and we drove to the northern tip of the island. There is a road laid on the ice there, it is actively used (locals drive UAZ “loaves” and motorcycles, there is actually no road in the northern half of the island either in winter or in summer - there is a direction). But no one pokes his nose beyond Cape Khoboy, onto the ice of the Great Sea. Yanukovych ignored this rule, as well as the fact that he took a local guide (he would probably have told him what it was better not to do), and went to the Big Sea, 200 meters away from the cape. The depths here range from approximately 20 to 50 meters. Five passengers managed to jump out of the car when it went under the ice, Yanukovych did not - he was wearing a seat belt, the doors were closed (also either from self-confidence, or from ignorance of the specifics of driving on ice). When the car went into the water, he managed to open his door slightly, but the car tilted to the left, driver's side. The survivors called the Ministry of Emergency Situations (the signal was received at 21.30) and quickly left the ice hole. At 23.40 they were discovered: they had walked 10 km along the ice towards their home. They were taken to Sakhyurta by hovercraft "Khivus", then rescuers and employees of the State Inspectorate for Small Boats (GIMS) returned to the scene of the emergency. The body was found under the ice, on the surface of the water, meaning the driver was able to get out of the car. Whether he choked while rising from the depths or died from hypothermia, I have no information; the air in a waterproof down jacket could have pulled him up. On the 21st the body was handed over to the police, on the 22nd the relatives took it and took it out on a private flight from Irkutsk airport with refueling in Ufa, on the 23rd it was buried at the memorial military cemetery in Sevastopol, where soldiers and officers of the Russian army who died in the Crimean War lie.
In early March, GIMS reported that the ice was unstable; constant strong movements were observed and cracks were forming. Mild weather and strong winds along the middle part of Lake Baikal contributed to the formation of gullies. Director of the travel company “Absolute Siberia” Alexey Nikiforov has been laying eco-routes on Lake Baikal for almost three decades
“On the eastern side of the island, behind Uzury, there were many areas of open water - large gullies, they eventually froze, but, of course, not enough for driving,” Nikiforov told Novaya. — Two of my German extreme sports acquaintances were unable to ride their bicycles there on March 12. And before that, a week before, two local fishermen drowned (bodies were recovered from depths of more than 200 meters, and an UAZ with a broken front and open doors was found). Baikal does not forgive brashness or carelessness. Yes, everyone loves to drive on ice in normal winters. But those who know at least do not fasten their seat belts, the doors are slightly open (as we see, this does not always save, but still). Having no experience of moving along Lake Baikal, Yanukovych Jr. might not have noticed the crack. Or, if it is small (up to 40 cm), try to pass it at speed, as the locals sometimes do. But in any case, before the crack, about ten meters away, they stop, get out and check the ice on both sides of the crack, since these faults are constantly moving. Probably this was not done. They just drove forward. But the ice is no longer thick enough. And if you are not moving along an ice crossing, simply no one can guarantee that after 200 meters the thickness of the ice will be the same.”
