Orban again said that Ukraine cannot defeat Russia
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told reporters that Ukraine will not be able to defeat Russia with the current strategy of supporting NATO, and also warned of the dire consequences of a war against Russia for the European economy.
It is reported by CNN.
“This war cannot be won in this form,” Orban said, speaking alongside Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in Vienna. Orban added that NATO countries' strategy of supporting Ukraine with weapons and training "has so far shown that it will not lead to success."
“Without a change in strategy, there will be no peace,” he said, warning that without peace in Ukraine the entire European Union “will be drawn into a war situation.”
“It is not clear how we can avoid a recession in the EU if the war continues,” Orban added.
Both Orban and Nehammer warned against the impossibility of imposing an EU embargo on Russian gas.
“We have just hit a wall, and this wall is called the gas embargo, and I would suggest the EU not to knock on this wall,” Orban said.
Nehammer, for his part, warned that such an embargo was “impossible.”
“Not only because we, like Austria, depend on Russian gas. German industry also depends on gas. And if German industry collapses, Austrian industry will collapse,” Nehammer said, adding that such a situation could lead to mass unemployment.
Previously, the Hungarian leader refrained from introducing EU energy sanctions against Russia and criticized the Western military assistance to Ukraine.
