Chisinau, May 08 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) – The General Inspectorate of the Police of Moldova is investigating criminal cases on the facts of “vandalism and hooliganism” that took place “during the propaganda rallies on May 5 and 6” near the Ukrainian Embassy building. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova reported this.

According to the ministry, “On May 5, a group of approximately one hundred people organized a public demonstration without prior permission, tying symbols prohibited by Ukrainian law—“St. George’s ribbons”—to the fence of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Chisinau.

The next day, a group of 50 young people near the Ukrainian Embassy took part in an unauthorized demonstration, during which they tried to “hang the same symbol, prohibited by the Ukrainian state, on the fence of the diplomatic mission. The action was stopped thanks to a warning broadcast through loudspeakers by the embassy security service.”

“Taking into account the diplomatic status of the mission under the Vienna Convention of 1961, the territory of the embassy is inviolable and cannot be violated in any way, and the authorities of the country hosting the mission, according to the same Convention, are obliged to take all appropriate measures to this end,” it said Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova.

The police are taking measures to identify the participants and organizers of these events; there are already two suspects. Organizers of protests face fines of up to 1000 conventional units or imprisonment for up to 7 years.

Actions using St. George ribbons near the building of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Chisinau were dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Odessa tragedy. The embassy has already stated that “hanging political or propaganda symbols of certain political forces or foreign states on its territory” will be considered an offense under the current legislation of Moldova.
