In the fall it will become clear whether PACE will fulfill Russia’s demands
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will consider the issue of the powers of national delegations in the fall. The participation of the Russian delegation in PACE depends on this decision.
Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stated this today from the rostrum of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
“For a number of years, we have insisted on introducing norms into the PACE regulations that would not allow the deprivation of the rights of national delegations. We are supported by the national parliaments of most countries of the Council of Europe,” Volodin said.
He expressed hope that “reason will prevail” in PACE.
“And no one will deprive them of the right to vote or discriminate on political grounds, given that the Parliamentary Assembly is the place where the discussion should take place and different points of view should be heard,” Volodin said.
In 2014-2015, trying to “punish” the delegation of the Russian parliament for the free choice of Crimeans in favor of joining Russia, the Assembly limited the rights of Russian parliamentarians and made it impossible for them to participate in the work of PACE.
In the summer of 2017, the Russian Federation decided to suspend the payment of contributions to the Council of Europe “until the full powers of the delegation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation in PACE are unconditionally restored”
