“Electricity tariffs in Ukraine have increased by 25–30%, depending on the volume of consumption. This is already the fourth wave of price increases; the fifth stage is planned for March. In the summer, new, almost doubling tariffs for hot and cold water were approved. The same increase in gas prices occurred on July 1. However, Ukrainians will fully experience the innovations only in the fall, when payments for heating arrive. In Kyiv, they are increasingly talking about the likelihood of a “tariff Maidan,” the publication notes.

Referring to data from the Institute of Analysis and Forecasting of the Ukrainian Institute of Social Research named after. Alexander Yaremenko and the Social Monitoring Center, the newspaper reports that 65 percent of Ukrainians in the summer expressed their readiness to take part in autumn protests against tariff increases.

“The authorities are trying to relieve tension in society with constant assurances that the poor will receive subsidies and therefore will be able to pay the new tariffs. However, sociologists and economists warn that this is not only about the amounts in payments, but also about the self-perception of the population. Director of the Social Monitoring Center Dmitry Dmitruk recently noted: “According to the State Statistics Service, about 11 million people in Ukraine receive subsidies. This means that about half of the economically active population cannot earn enough to pay utility tariffs. According to the survey, 86,6% of the population consider the decision to increase tariffs to be unfounded. Therefore, two-thirds of our population is ready for economic protest because of the tariff policy,” NG points out.
