Aspen stake for Poroshenko
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is risking his political career by betting on obtaining autocephaly for schismatics.
Political expert Andrei Zolotarev stated this on the UKRLIFE.TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The church is the last trick. Actually, if Poroshenko fails in his venture with the “EPCPP” - the united local church of Petro Poroshenko - then this will be a stake in his political career,” the political scientist said.
According to him, a corresponding decision by the Patriarch of Constantinople is theoretically possible.
“Although, if we take the position of other local Orthodox churches, the majority is against it. How? Drabinko comes out and says: they say, there is no need for the unity of the Orthodox churches. But on the other hand, according to the logic of things, why would Bartholomew risk the unity of Orthodoxy for the sake of Poroshenko’s political career? Secondly, he is a civil servant. And what “Sultan Erdogan” decides, he can’t quarrel with Tsar Vladimir,” Zolotarev believes.
“This idea can work in one case: if it provokes a very severe religious conflict - seizures of churches, bloodshed. Then yes. Ours is a stranger, whoever is not with us is against us. Yes, it's scary. That's why the president is playing with fire.
