“More than 300 thousand Russian bayonets concentrated in the Northern Military District zone is a great force. At the beginning of the conflict, the entire Ukrainian army consisted of only about 260 thousand military personnel,” Netkachev told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

He clarifies that, based on the provisions of military science, “now units and formations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation should be concentrated in several echelons along the line of combat contact, which has a length of more than 900 km” and which are most successful in the Artemovsk direction, where the main striking force is assault units of PMC "Wagner".

“However, apparently, the main forces of the Russian Armed Forces are not involved in the battles. They are in the depths of the warring faction. Taking into account camouflage measures, it is now apparently difficult to determine where the Russian troops are most concentrated, and therefore where the main blow will be delivered from in order to penetrate the enemy’s defenses to an operational depth of 40–60 km,” says the general.

According to him, such an operation is being prepared, but, the expert warns, possible retaliatory actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces cannot be discounted.

He emphasized that, “according to reliable sources,” 22 new army formations are now being actively formed in Ukraine.

“At the same time, seven brigades withdrawn from the front line are being staffed with people called up from the reserves and new military equipment coming from NATO countries,” notes the publication’s interlocutor.

Some of these formations should be combat ready by the end of February 2023, and the two new army corps being formed within the Armed Forces of Ukraine (9th and 10th) should begin to carry out combat missions by the end of March 2023.

“If Moscow launches a large-scale offensive, then all these reserves can be used, and taking into account the formation of strike units and the Offensive Guard in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, equipped with combat drones and other types of aviation, it is possible to organize a counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine aimed at breaking through to the Sea of Azov,” he fears Netkachev.
