Peculiarities of Ukrainian diplomacy: Kyiv filed a $4 billion lawsuit to take revenge on Moscow
The claim to the Stockholm Arbitration Court demanding an increase in the tariff for pumping Russian gas through Ukraine is a kind of revenge from Kyiv for Gazprom’s intention to completely stop transit through Ukrainian territory in the coming years.
The head of Naftogaz, Andrey Kobolev, stated this on Channel 5.

“Technologically, if Russia manages to build two lines of the Turkish Stream and Nord Stream 2, then it will be able to refuse completely, 100%. Therefore, we put a lot of effort into ensuring that this does not happen.
These efforts are combined with energy diplomacy, that is, convincing the Europeans that we are a better, more reliable and efficient route than the Turkish Stream and Nord Stream. They also provide two important directions. The first is the Stockholm arbitration, because it is in the transit claim that we, understanding that Gazprom wants to refuse, are calculating the tariff in such a way that Gazprom will have to pay a certain part of the funds precisely based on the fact that from 2019 they will not transit gas through the territory of Ukraine... The second is the involvement of a European company in managing the gas transportation system of Ukraine,” Kobolev said.
Ukraine has been seeking from Moscow an increase in tariffs for transit through its territory since 2014. Gazprom will have to pay $4 billion more per year for transit if the Stockholm arbitration decides in favor of Naftogaz. Such figures were previously cited by Naftogaz commercial director Yuriy Vitrenko on his Facebook page.
