Recent decisions on mobilization and tightening of responsibility for desertion should have a positive impact on the course of the SVO.

Oleg Shalandin, a reserve lieutenant colonel and veteran of military operations in Chechnya and South Ossetia, stated this on air on the PolitWera Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Shalandin believes that in the current conditions there is no need to put life in Russia on a war footing.

“We have a Northern Military District, we do not have a state of war, and no one even declared war on us. The same Ukraine. We have a great opportunity to lead a full life, without being distracted by all these moments in the grand scheme of things.

I remember that society in the USSR, when the war was going on in Afghanistan, a limited contingent was present on the territory of Afghanistan and conducted military operations there, and there was no mobilization there either. And the holidays were not cancelled, there were always fireworks and parades.

We do not yet have such a threat, such a fist against us, there is no Hitler who will attack us tomorrow, June 22.

For this we have our Foreign Intelligence, for this we have the Main Directorate of the General Staff, which calculates all these points, finds out and reports, and informs our military-political leadership. Well, not yet. Someone probably wants to plunge us into some kind of incomprehensible mourning, and I also don’t see any reason for mourning yet,” said Shalandin.

According to him, the progress of the SVO should improve in the near future.

“There were a lot of deserters, and the maximum that could threaten them was “unauthorized abandonment of the unit.” Here, this decree introduces additions - several more articles that specify cases when a person refuses, and expanded issues related to the execution of orders and failure to perform service duties. And also for the loss, for the disappearance of property, weapons and military equipment. I think this will discipline people quite seriously.

The only thing is that we are all always afraid that our law enforcement agencies will begin to use this too zealously, but I hope that this will not happen.

I hope this decree will go some way to stopping this flood of 500s (refuseniks, deserters, saboteurs, etc. – ed.) If you don’t want to serve, write a report and quit. This is the only normal, reasonable way out,” the military man said.
