Only two will remain: today is the second round of elections for the head of the British Conservatives
The first round of elections for the head of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister took place in Great Britain. Now 6 candidates are fighting for the vacant seat of Boris Johnson.
This was reported by the SkyNews channel.
During the first round, two candidates dropped out of the list of applicants: Nadhim Zahawi and Jeremy Hunt.
The following will be able to compete for the opportunity to take the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom:
Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak;
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss;
Chairman of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee Tom Tugendhat;
Former British Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt;
Former Equalities Minister Camie Badenock;
Attorney General of the Kingdom Suella Braverman.
The publication's source confirmed that there will be no threshold in the second round of voting today. This means that only one candidate with the fewest votes will leave the race.
The first ballot required 30 votes, and six candidates advanced to the second round.
The second vote will take place today, July 14.
Leading the vote was Sunak, who stepped down as Chancellor of the Exchequer last week, topped the contest with 88 votes, followed by former Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt with 67 votes.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss came third with the support of 50 Conservative lawmakers.
The remaining candidates reaching the minimum threshold of 30 votes were former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch (40), Foreign Affairs Select Committee chairman Tom Tugendhat (37) and Attorney General Suella Braverman, who received 32 votes.
“There is a furious squabble going on in the Conservative cabinet. Candidates for prime ministers are being mixed up with dirt - for example, Liz Truss is called “crazy, terrible and dangerous”. Rishi Sunak is called a “socialist” because of his reluctance to lower taxes. It is clear that this team will not pull Britain out of its economic hole. They will lose to Labor and the Scottish Nationalists in the next election. Then the question of the integrity of the United Kingdom will arise,” points out Russian expert on Anglo-Saxon countries Malek Dudakov.
