Moscow - Kyiv, December 15 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - In just a year, only memories have remained from our close Ukraine, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote in his article written for Nezavisimaya Gazeta. The most difficult thing lies ahead for Ukraine, he asserts in the article, but writes at the same time that “no matter what attacks may be made against us, we have no right to succumb to provocations.” This can be interpreted as Moscow’s preference for economic methods of influencing Kyiv over military methods.

“It’s only been a year – and only memories remain of that country close to us, with which we were friends, traded, where we went on vacation and to visit relatives,” writes Medvedev. – We in Russia experience these events as our own pain. We help even those who accept this help with a grin, continuing to live under the slogan “Ukraine is not Russia.” I am sincerely sorry that representatives of the Ukrainian elite have not yet been able to either propose or implement another strategic program for the country’s development. As chairman of the government, I see this every day in numbers that confirm: the most difficult thing for our neighbors, unfortunately, is still ahead.”

At the same time, “no matter what attacks are made against us, we do not have the right to succumb to provocations,” the Russian Prime Minister further writes in an article published today in “NG”. “We have no right to forget: on the other side of the border there live people close to us in spirit, culture, and mentality, whose fate will never be indifferent to us.”

This is probably Medvedev's way of making it clear that Russia has no intention of solving its problems with Ukraine by military means. At the same time, in the future he makes it clear in his article that Moscow’s economic relations with Kiev will henceforth be extremely tough.
